ICTP-SAIFR in Physics Today
In its October issue, the magazine Physics Today published a report about the ICTP and its regional centers. ICTP celebrates this year its 50th Anniversary and, aside from ICTP-SAIFR which was its first regional center, there are other regional centers active or in the planning stages in Mexico, Turkey, China and Rwanda. |

New director and vice-director at IFT-UNESP On August 25, Rogério Rosenfeld and Marcelo Takeshi Yamashita became the new director and vice-director of IFT- UNESP, the Institute for Theoretical Physics of Sao Paulo State University that hosts ICTP-SAIFR. IFT-UNESP has research activities in all areas of theoretical physics as well as in experimental high-energy physics and its graduate program has consistently received the top rating from the national agency CAPES. From left to right, Juan Montero (former IFT-UNESP director), Marcelo Yamashita, Marilza Rudge (vice-rector of UNESP) and Rogério Rosenfeld. |

More office space for the ICTP-SAIFR
In addition to its previous office space, the ICTP-SAIFR has built four new office rooms for visitors on the first floor of the IFT-UNESP building. The substantial increase in the number of visitors and events at ICTP-SAIFR since its creation in 2011 has made necessary the construction of this new area. |

Discussion session with Brian Greene
On September 19, Prof. Brian Greene (Columbia University) visited ICTP-SAIFR for an informal question-answer discussion session (link to video here). Prof. Greene is co-director of Columbia's Institute for Strings, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics and is the author of several best-selling books on theoretical physics such as `The Elegant Universe', `The Fabric of the Cosmos' and `The Hidden Reality'. |

Going on After the LHC8 GOAL Workshop
Organized by researchers from USP, IFT/ICTP-SAIFR and CERN, the Workshop was held at ICTP-SAIFR on August 11-15. There were 28 invited speakers who reviewed the progress brought to the field due to the last LHC experiments and discussed the perspectives of research before the LHC is turned on again in 2015. |

Kosower Minicourse on QCD Amplitudes
From August 18 to 22, Prof. David Kosower (Saclay) visited ICTP-SAIFR to present a minicourse entitled `On-Shell Methods, Amplitudes and Collider Physics' and to give a colloquium entitled ‘Precision Quantum Chromodynamics at the LHC’. Prof. Kosower received the 2014 J.J. Sakurai Prize for his contributions in scattering amplitudes in gauge theories and his lectures covered the basic ingredients that underlie developments in computations of scattering amplitudes in recent years. |

School on Random Geometry and Random Matrices
The School on Random Geometry and Random Matrices was held at ICTP-SAIFR from August 25 – September 2. This school was organized by Diego Trancanelli (USP) and Stefan Zohren (PUC - Rio) and participants included both physicists and mathematicians. This interdisciplinary school discussed applications of random geometry and random matrices in high energy physics, statistical physics and probability theory. |

Workshop on Random Geometry and Random Matrices
Following the School on Random Geometry and Random Matrices, this two-day workshop held at ICTP-SAIFR on September 3-4 hosted a series of talks on recent progress on research in this area. Topics included applications of random geometry to research in critical phase transitions, percolation theory, quantum gravity, Brownian motion, and quantum chaos. |
