Workshop on Adv. Tech. in Scientific Computing
The Workshop on Advanced Techniques in Scientific Computing was held at ICTP-SAIFR/NCC from April 13 - 24 and was organized by Eduardo Bach (NCC), Nathan Berkovits (ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP), Ivan Girotto (ICTP-Trieste), David Grellscheid (IPPP, Durham U.), Rogério Iope (NCC), Axel Kohlmeyer (Temple Univ, Philadelphia), Beraldo Leal (NCC), Sergio Novaes (NCC/IFT-UNESP) and Gabriel von Winckler (NCC). The curriculum activities focused on creating modular and reusable software frameworks with a scripting language interface and also covered modern collaborative software management tools. |

Monte Carlo School on Event Generators From April 27 - 30, the Monte Carlo School on Event Generators was organized at the Sao Paulo campus of UNESP as an external activity of ICTP-Trieste in collaboration with ICTP-SAIFR and the UNESP Nucleus of Scientific Computing (NCC). Through a series of lectures and hands-on practical tutorial sessions, this activity provided a four day course of training in the physics and techniques used in modern Monte Carlo event generators for the Large Hadron Collider. Lecturers included J. Butterworth (London), L. Lonnblad (Sweden), O. Mattelaer (Durham), A. Siodmok (CERN) and D. Grellscheid (ICTP/Durham). |

Inauguration of the ICTP-SAIFR Isaias Raw Chair
On May 8, the ICTP-SAIFR Isaias Raw Chair was inaugurated which will partially fund the salary of a new ICTP-SAIFR professor. This Chair is financed by a private donation and named after the renowned Brazilian scientist who directed the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo. At the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Raw discussed his fascinating career which includes important contributions in both scientific research and educational projects in Brazil. His numerous prizes include the Brazilian Order of Merit in 1995 and the Conrado Wessel Award in 2004. |

Águas Futuras
ICTP-SAIFR associate researchers Roberto Kraenkel (IFT-UNESP) and Paulo I. Prado (IB-USP), together with postdoc Renato Coutinho (IFT-UNESP), created a mathematical model to predict the amount of water available in the Cantareira reservoir system. This reservoir system is critical for Sao Paulo´s water supply and is currently operating at historically low levels. The "Aguas Futuras" project of these researchers has been made available online in the form of an interactive webpage that received widespread coverage in May from the local media. |

Visit of Mirjam Cvetic
In June, Prof. Mirjam Cvetic (University of Pennsylvania, USA) visited ICTP-SAIFR and gave a colloquium on June 24 entitled “Modern String Theory Confronts Particle Physics and Black Holes”. In this colloquium, she highlighted the most recent progress made in deriving particle physics from F-theory and reviewed recent studies of the internal structure of non-extremal black holes in string theory via introduction of the so-called subtracted geometry. |
