Workshop on Skills for Young Scientists/Increasing Diversity in STEM

October 7-11, 2019

ICTP-SAIFR, São Paulo, Brazil

Auditorium of IFT-UNESP

Home

This is the combination of two activities that will take place one after the other. All participants are encouraged to take part in both. We will first have a workshop to equip young scientists and science students with professional skills for a better development of their careers factoring in a gender perspective. We will then have a meeting where we will present the most recent results of the project entitled “A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical, Computational and Natural Sciences: how to measure it, how to reduce it?” (https://gender-gap-in-science.org/), focusing on those related to Latin America .

Workshop on Skills for Young Scientists

This workshop is the continuation of previous workshops held in Puebla, Mexico, in 2014; Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2016, http://wp.df.uba.ar/tdscti/es/inicio/; Bogota, Colombia, in 2017, https://emcyt_icsu017.uniandes.edu.co/ and Lima, Peru, in 2018, http://www.unmsm.edu.pe/eventos/ver/taller-internacional-de-habilidades-profesionales-para-mujeres-en-ciencia-tecnologia-e-ingenieria.

It is aimed mainly for Latin American graduate students and researchers of STEM areas at early stages of their careers, particularly, of disciplines where women are under-represented such as Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Computer Science and Earth Science. The goals of the Workshop are:

  • To contribute towards a larger participation of women in STEM areas, potentiating their capacities.
  • To equip young Latin American scientists and science students with useful tools for a successful career development.
  • To offer the opportunity to talk with consolidated female scientists learning from their experience and to establish a dialogue with social scientists with interest in the problems associated to gender, diversity and science.
  • To foster collaborations within the Latin American region to promote the growth of multidisciplinary investigations.

Increasing Diversity in STEM

The workshop will start with a roundtable on race and racial barriers in the scientific and academic communities. We will then move on to the gender gap in science, focusing on the results about the gender gap in science in Latin America that were obtained within the Global Gender Gap in Science Project. More specifically, some of the results obtained through the Global Survey of Scientists (https://gender-gap-in-science.org/2019/01/04/answers-to-the-global-survey-of-scientists/) will be presented. This survey was open from May through December, 2018, and collected over 34,000 responses (4,034 from Latin America). We will also discuss the contents of the book “La brecha de género en Matemáticas, Computación y Ciencias Naturales: Un Abordaje desde América Latina”, that, with the edition of Lilia Meza (Puebla, Mexico) and Silvina Ponce Dawson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is about to be published by the Mexican Physical Society. This book contains contributions by the participants of the Regional Latin American Workshop (http://wp.df.uba.ar/ggapsla/) associated to the Global Gender Gap in Science Project that took place in Bogotá, Colombia, in November 2017. Participants will be able to showcase the initiatives and efforts carried on in their countries and disciplines to reduce the gender gap in science and increase diversity in STEM.

There is no registration fee and limited funds are available for travel and local expenses.
